ANALYSES /BALKAN Source: The Bosnia Times When we look back to 19th century Balkans reality, almost through whole century we can see that it was divided between the three centers of power. In the 19th century these centuries were İstanbul-Moscow-Vienna, last one later in combination with Berlin. It seems that this ‘’triangle’’ is going to be repeated in the coming years in slightly different form. It is hard to prove this theory, but what is for sure is that we are entering the 19th century like reality in different  forms, but with the same players in the Balkans. Other famous and theory much easier to prove among themodern times  historians is that processes which are happening in the  20th and 21st centuries are actually continuation and final resolvement period for the processes which started in the 19th century.

We are witnessing more active Turkish policy in the Balkans in the last few years. Turkey with its new AKP government and with the coming of the foreign relations minister Ahmet Davutoğlu to power is trying to develop a new foreign policy which is trying to position Turkey as a more influential player, and not just in the Balkans, but also in all the neighboring regions.  When it comes to Balkans, Turkey has a problem with changing its image in the region which was for a long time poisoned by nationalistic elite and academia of the region. Not just in political, but also in the academic circles, Ottoman history was perceived in a very subjective manner.  This generated hatred and untruthfulness toward the Turks in the region which has its deep roots going back to middle ages. Ottoman period of history is still seen as a main obstacle in development of the region by many today. Günümüzde algı  ve imaj oluşturma konusunda en önemli ve etkin araçlardan birisi kesinlikle eğitim sistemidir. Geniş kitlelere istenilen mesajı ulaştırmak açısından ders kitapları mükemmel bir araçtır. Tarih boyunca bu coğrafya da bulunan milletler arasında  yaşanan bazı düşmanlıklardan dolayı oluşan önyargılar, Yugoslavya’nın dağılmasından sonra kamuya açık anlatılmaya ve kendi toplumundan olmayanlara karşı kışkırtıcı ve korkutucu bir araç olarak kullanılmaya başlandı.
